The Brazilian cryptocurrency market has scored yet another milestone, offering investors the world’s first XRP exchange-traded fund (ETF). A recent survey conducted by Yougov, an international online research data firm, has given insights into the advancement of crypto as a true money replacement in Brazil. According to a recent poll, nearly 15% of Brazilians would consider substituting the function of their bank accounts for crypto, using this alternative technology instead. Specifically, 14.7% of the polled were open to this possibility, with 5.7% agreeing to make this decision, while 9% tend to agree with such an arrangement. However, over 60% would still disagree with using crypto instead of banks: 39.7% would definitely disagree with this, while 21.7% tend to disagree with this idea. Those on the borderline of the argument, with no preference for any option, reached 23.9%. According to David Eastman, Yougov’s managing director for Latin America, this should become a catalyst for a change in how banks conduct business with their customers. In a hypothetical case where these customers do leave, this would affect the income of these financial institutions, cutting a substantial amount of their revenue in the process. “Banks will have to adopt new practices to avoid this,” Eastman told Valor Economico. Even with the popularity of crypto and the rise of crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for institutions to jump onto the crypto bandwagon in Brazil, there is still a widespread distrust of crypto. The same poll revealed that 40.4% agreed that cryptocurrencies weren’t trustworthy, with only 21.6% disagreeing with this statement. This has to do with the elevated number of crypto-linked fraud schemes affecting Brazilians since years ago. Buterin gave his support to the Argentine crypto community in the wake of the debacle of Libra, a cryptocurrency project that was shared by President Javier Milei on social media, leaving tens of thousands affected. Remarking on this idea, Buterin stated: The energy and determination to build on Argentina’s current momentum and use crypto and other new technologies to build a prosperous 21st century society is real. Argentina has been consistently ranking among the top spots of cryptocurrency and blockchain adoption charts for years. This is attributed to several economic woes that everyday citizens have to deal with, including devaluation, inflation, and also an exchange control that limits the amount of foreign currency Argentines can manage. A South African alternative investment firm, Altvest Capital Ltd., announced its first investment in bitcoin (BTC) as part of a strategic treasury management initiative. The Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed firm said the goal of this initiative is to strengthen financial resilience, preserve shareholder value and gain exposure to the top cryptocurrency. According to a Bloomberg report, Altvest Capital has applied for approval to raise about $10 million (200 million rand) by selling shares to increase its treasury stockpile. While acknowledging the existence of other digital assets, Altvest Capital said many exhibit characteristics that “do not align with its investment philosophy.” Consequently, the alternative investment firm said it will avoid other cryptocurrencies. The South African firm joins a growing list of companies, including Michael Saylor’s Strategy (Microstrategy) and Japanese investment firm Metaplanet, that have added BTC to their respective treasury stockpiles. As of Feb. 23, Strategy and Metaplanet owned 478,740 BTC and 2,100 BTC, respectively. Remarking on his company’s decision to follow in the footsteps of Strategy and Metaplanet, which have solely focused on bitcoin, Warren Wheatley, CEO of Altvest Capital, said: Bitcoin is fundamentally different from other digital assets. It is the only truly decentralized, scarce and globally recognized digital asset that aligns with Altvest’s investment philosophy. We see bitcoin as a strategic reserve asset that enhances our treasury portfolio while providing a hedge against economic instability and currency depreciation. However, in a statement released Feb. 21, the South African firm said it will continue to assess market conditions and technological advancements.
