Dow rises 300 points as trade deal hints lift Wall Street from Trump-era slump
U.S. stocks closed higher as investors welcomed signs of progress on trade policy and processed a flurry of corporate earnings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 300 points, or nearly 0.75%, while the S&P 500 gained 0.6% and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.5%.
The bounce gained momentum in the afternoon after U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told CNBC that a trade deal with an unnamed country was “done” but awaiting approval abroad. Investors interpreted the remarks as a positive signal amid uncertainty surrounding Trump’s trade strategy.
Despite the rally, President Donald Trump’s first 100 days of his new term have shaped up to be the worst for markets at the start of a presidency since Richard Nixon’s in 1973.
The S&P 500 is on track for its biggest loss over the first 100 days of a presidential term in more than five decades.
Earlier, Trump signed an executive order preventing overlapping auto tariffs, offering a reprieve to automakers already strained by existing levies.
General Motors, which posted stronger-than-expected earnings, pulled its 2025 guidance and suspended share buybacks while awaiting further clarity.
Amazon shares also reversed losses after denying plans to display tariff-related surcharges on its site. The White House had called the rumored move a “hostile and political act.”
Earnings were in focus, with Spotify and Coca-Cola reporting before the bell, and Starbucks due after the close. Honeywell jumped 5% after a solid earnings beat, helping lead the Dow higher.
Still, economic data underlined broader uncertainty. Consumer confidence fell for the fifth straight month, and job openings hovered at a four-year low.
Bitcoin ( BTC ) traded around the $95,000 threshold for most of the day.

Stocks edge higher ahead of big earnings week
Stocks were slightly up at open on Monday ahead of major earnings reports, including for the Magnificent Seven.
The market looked to bounce even as tariffs remained a key issue that investors are increasingly seeing as a source of major uncertainty. The S&P 500 opened 0.28% up, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.45% and Nasdaq added 0.21%.
Across the market, Bitcoin (BTC) was up nearly 2% above $95k and gold +0.3% around $3,307 per ounce.
However, the U.S. Treasury yields also remained high on Monday, with the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield up 2 basis points to 4.29%. Meanwhile, the 2-year Treasury yield was at 3.76%.
The S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq futures had slipped ahead of U.S. markets opening on April 28, with focus in the week set on upcoming Big Tech earnings.
As well as tariffs, still an area of notable uncertainty , the market will also be keen releases on the economic data front.
While President Donald Trump’s tariffs remarks and an easing of pressure on Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell helped Wall Street extend weekly gains last week, the U.S.-China trade war situation remains largely cloudy.
“I think there is a quiet, bubbling frustration about the status of these negotiations and the status of tariffs,” Jake Sherman, founder of Punchbowl, told CNBC’s ‘Squawk Box’.
Focus through the week will however not be just on the tariffs corner.
Earnings and Fed’s personal consumer expenditure will highlight the week. Notable quarterly financial results investors are likely to pay attention to are from the Magnificent 7 that includes Big Tech giants Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN) and Meta (META).
“Markets have rebounded very nicely off the lows,” said Stephanie Link, chief investment strategist, head of investment solutions at Hightower Advisors. “I think we can continue to rally if earnings continue to be good.”
The earnings come through the week, while PCE data, Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, will be out on Wednesday April 30.

Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq slide as tech earnings fears and tariff tensions collide
U.S. stocks trended downwards today, as traders hope that tech earnings to boost the markets, despite ongoing tariff fears.
Stock markets faced pressure on several fronts ahead of a key week for earnings. On Monday, April 28, the Dow Jones was trading at 39,907.54, down 205.96 points or 0.51% from the market open. The S&P 500 fell 49.57 points, or 0.90%, to 5,474.25, while the tech-focused Nasdaq was down 227.24 points, or 1.31%, trading at 17,155.70.
Nvidia was among the biggest losers today, falling 4.18% to $106.45 per share, losing $100 million in market cap. The drop coincided with Huawei launching its advanced Ascend 910D chip, a direct competitor to Nvidia’s H100. The Chinese tech giant hopes to fill the gap in the Chinese market after White House’s ban on AI chip exports .
Uncertainty also affected both the dollar and Bitcoin. The dollar index was down 0.44% from the previous close, at 99.03. At the same time, Bitcoin (BTC) also experienced a slight correction after last week’s rally, falling 0.37% to $93,741. At the same time, gold rallied 0.10% to $3,336 per ounce.
The general sentiment in the markets is one of uncertainty and anticipation over the effects of Donald Trump’s tariffs and upcoming tech earnings. Apple, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft, some of the largest tech firms in the world, are set to report their earnings this week.
Still, investors are concerned that current earnings expectations may be too high, given the ongoing macroeconomic headwinds. In particular, tariffs, especially those on China, are beginning to cause real economic damage.
At the same time, markets are seeing mixed signals when it comes to lifting the historic 145% tariffs on China. On April 28, the Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that it was “up to China” to de-escalate the trade war, suggesting that the White House is not yet ready to start making concessions.
