LINE introduces Telegram-style ‘Mini DApps’ with Kaia mainnet launch
The popular messaging app LINE is now integrating “mini DApps” with the launch of Kaia’s mainnet, following the trend set by its rival, Telegram, which introduced a similar feature last year.
Kaia is a layer-1 blockchain formed from the merger of Japan’s LINE’s Finschia blockchain and South Korea’s Kakao’s Klaytn blockchain, two of Asia's leading social messaging platforms.
The Kaia mainnet, which launched on August 29, boasts impressive capabilities, including “processing speeds of approximately one second” and “extremely low gas fees,” as announced by the Kaia DLT Foundation.
With the mainnet launch, the Kaia project also introduced Kaika Wave, a developer program designed to facilitate the creation of “mini DApps” for LINE, further expanding the platform's utility.
These mini DApps are decentralised applications that will operate within LINE, offering a wide range of functionalities similar to those found on Telegram, such as to-do lists, language tutoring, job searching, and various crypto-related apps.
While specific details about the mini DApps launching on LINE have not been disclosed, the move parallels Telegram’s Mini Apps, which leverage The Open Network (CRYPTO:TON) blockchain.
Telegram’s Mini Apps have gained significant traction, offering users tools for trading, staking, token launching, and play-to-earn games, despite recent challenges with the TON blockchain.
The TON blockchain experienced significant outages recently, with two major disruptions lasting over seven hours and six hours, respectively, between August 27 and 29.
These outages were attributed to a “network overload” caused by the airdrop of a dog-themed memecoin called Dogs (CRYPTO:DOGS), which strained the network as users rushed to participate.
LINE’s integration of Kaia’s blockchain-based mini DApps could position it as a major player in the growing intersection of messaging apps and decentralised applications in Asia.
Kaia’s combined user base from LINE and Kakao exceeds 250 million, with a significant concentration in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and Indonesia, offering a vast potential market for these new blockchain features.
The launch of Kaia and its mini DApps on LINE could pave the way for further innovations in how users interact with decentralised technologies within familiar messaging platforms.
At the time of reporting, Toncoin price was $5.57.
