Controversial businessman Martin Shkreli, known as the “Pharma Bro,” has slammed MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor for his aggressive stance on Bitcoin investment. During an appearance on the Shkreli Planet podcast, Shkreli said Saylor’s strategy represents a bubble waiting to burst, suggesting that the executive’s optimism is excessive and disconnected from reality.
At the time of publication, the price of Bitcoin was quoted at US$106.650 with a drop of 0.3% in the last 24 hours.
MicroStrategy, under Saylor’s leadership, has been accumulating Bitcoin since 2020 as part of its treasury reserve strategy. The company began its journey into the cryptocurrency market by acquiring around 21 BTC for $250 million. In its latest purchase, the company spent $1,5 billion to add another 15.350 BTC to its balance sheet, bringing its reserves to around 440 Bitcoin.
Despite the criticism, MicroStrategy’s stock price has soared, rising nearly 500% this year alone, cementing the company’s position in the Nasdaq-100 index. Shkreli, however, revealed that he is betting against MicroStrategy’s stock, without disclosing the exact size of his short position. He described the process as “fun but a little painful,” suggesting that while the market may not be aligned with his bearish view, he remains convinced.
In addition to questioning the financial strategy, Shkreli criticized Saylor's public stance as a Bitcoin advocate. Saylor recently proposed to Microsoft that the company allocate part of its resources to Bitcoin, as a strategy to increase its market value and mitigate financial risks. However, the proposal was rejected by the overwhelming majority of the tech giant's shareholders, with only 0,5% voting in favor.
For Shkreli, Saylor’s inability to convince large companies to follow his vision weakens the bullish narrative about Bitcoin. The entrepreneur also mentioned that although MicroStrategy has injected billions of dollars into the cryptocurrency, the expected impact on the asset’s price has not yet occurred in a significant way, indicating a still cautious market sentiment.
Finally, Shkreli speculated on the future of Bitcoin as a strategic asset for the United States, especially with its increasing adoption by political figures. However, he expressed skepticism about the sustainability of this view, predicting that future governments could undo possible gains in BTC accumulation.
