Sam Altman expects AI agents in workforce by 2025
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman anticipates that the first artificial intelligence agents could enter the workforce in 2025, marking a significant milestone in the development of humanlike artificial general intelligence (AGI).
In a blog post titled “Reflections” on January 6, Altman shared his belief that AI agents—systems capable of autonomous decision-making and goal-directed behavior—could transform business productivity.
“We believe that, in 2025, we may see the first AI agents ‘join the workforce’ and materially change the output of companies,” Altman wrote.
AI agents are designed to understand complex goals, make decisions, and execute multi-step reasoning with minimal human intervention.
Altman’s statement reflects growing confidence in the capability of AI to handle tasks previously reserved for humans.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang also sees AI agents gaining mainstream adoption.
“We’re starting to see enterprise adoption of agentic AI really is the latest rage,” Huang remarked during his company’s November earnings call.
Beyond agentic AI, Altman expressed confidence that OpenAI is nearing the creation of AGI, which represents a step toward machines that exhibit human-like intelligence.
“We are now confident we know how to build AGI as we have traditionally understood it,” Altman stated.
Looking further ahead, Altman highlighted OpenAI’s ambition to pursue superintelligence, which could revolutionise fields like scientific discovery.
“Superintelligent tools could massively accelerate scientific discovery and innovation,” Altman said, emphasising the potential for a more abundant and prosperous future.
OpenAI’s breakthrough with the ChatGPT chatbot has been a pivotal moment in AI’s evolution, with expectations for further advancements in 2025.
“We are finally seeing some of the massive upsides we have always hoped for from AI,” Altman concluded.
