Semler Scientific acquires 871 Bitcoin for $88M
Semler Scientific, a healthcare technology firm, has significantly expanded its cryptocurrency portfolio by purchasing 871 Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) for approximately $88.5 million.
This acquisition occurred between January 11 and February 3, 2025, bringing Semler's total Bitcoin holdings to 3,192 BTC.
The average purchase price for the recent acquisition was reported at $101,616 per Bitcoin.
With this latest investment, Semler now holds Bitcoin valued at around $313 million based on current market prices.
The company’s strategy to fund this purchase involved issuing senior convertible notes and monetising a portion of its investment in Monarch Medical Technologies.
“We are thrilled with the progress we are making in growing our Bitcoin stockpile,” Semler’s chairman Eric Semler stated in a press release, expressing satisfaction with the company’s progress.
Semler's Bitcoin yield has been notable, achieving a remarkable 152% since adopting its treasury strategy in July 2024.
This yield reflects the percentage change in the ratio of Bitcoin holdings to its fully diluted shares outstanding over time.
As of February 3, 2025, Semler’s total investment in Bitcoin amounts to $280.4 million at an average cost of $87,854 per coin.
The firm has seen its stock rise significantly since it began investing in Bitcoin, with shares increasing by over 105% compared to pre-announcement levels.
This strategic move places Semler as the tenth-largest corporate holder of Bitcoin globally.
The timing of this acquisition coincides with MicroStrategy's decision to pause its own purchasing spree after acquiring substantial amounts of Bitcoin.
MicroStrategy currently holds 471,107 BTC and has opted to maintain its position amid market fluctuations.
At the time of reporting, the Bitcoin (BTC) price was $96,682.39.
