French Finance Minister: Trump's tariff suspension indicates there is still room for negotiation
French Finance Minister Le Maire stated that Trump's decision to suspend many planned import tariffs confirms the US government's willingness to reach an agreement with Europe. "This confirms there is room for negotiation with the Trump administration."
Last week, Trump said he would temporarily suspend reciprocal tariffs on many trading partners, including the EU. Le Maire said: "I am surprised that Trump changed his position so quickly." He pointed out that the direct impact of tariffs will be to lower US economic growth and increase US inflation. However, Le Maire said it was too early to declare victory given some tariffs still exist. "For this reason, Europe must maintain pressure," he said.
