In 2025, 83% of institutional investors plan to increase their allocation of funds to crypto holdings, according to a report by Coinbase and EY-Parthenon. The report, which was published on Mar. 18 on Coinbase’s blog, collected opinions from decision-makers in 352 companies. It revealed that there is a growing belief that cryptocurrency will continue to yield strong returns. Over half (59%) of those surveyed plan to allocate at least 5% of their assets under management to digital assets this year. This shift signals that crypto is moving beyond its reputation as a niche investment and is becoming a core part of institutional portfolios. 84% of investors are either using or considering using stablecoins , which have gained massive traction in the past year. Although stablecoins have historically been used to facilitate cryptocurrency transactions, they are currently being explored for use in yield generation, foreign exchange, cash management, and payments, among other areas. Institutional interest in decentralized finance is rising as well. While only 24% of surveyed investors currently engage with DeFi, that figure is expected to reach 75% within two years. Many businesses view DeFi as a chance to gain access to the lending, derivatives, and staking markets. 73% of respondents said they own assets other than Bitcoin ( BTC ) and Ethereum ( ETH ), indicating that interest in altcoins is still high. Ripple ( XRP ) and Solana ( SOL ) are the most commonly held, and many investors are considering single-asset exchange-traded products for altcoins. Even with the optimism, there are still obstacles to overcome. Investors’ top concerns are regulatory uncertainty (52%), market volatility (47%), and secure custody (33%). 68% of respondents believe that more transparent regulations will contribute to future market expansion. In a related development, on Mar. 17, Securitize and Ethena Labs launched Converge, a blockchain designed to support institutional adoption of tokenized assets. Backed by leading companies like Aave Labs, Pendle, and Maple Finance, the Ethereum-compatible network seeks to connect DeFi and traditional finance by offering a regulated setting for tokenized assets.

RWA tokenization gained momentum going into 2025, with the market reaching $13.7 billion a few months ago. The listed tokens, such as Maker and Pendle, represent diverse RWA applications, from stablecoin-backed assets to decentralized finance integrations. As such, RWAs have become a hot topic in the current market cycle because they represent a bridge between traditional finance (TradFi) and decentralized finance (DeFi). The expressed interest from major institutions like BlackRock and JPMorgan has contributed to the increased attention surrounding tokenized assets. When you look at the chart, the wide gap between the market caps among RWAs is quite noticeable. MANTRA is leading the charge by far, possibly due to its partnerships and regulatory-friendly approach. In addition, the project is building a full-stack RWA ecosystem, focusing on tokenized real estate, institutional finance, and DeFi integrations. On the other hand, Ondo is offering tokenized US Treasury bonds, which are among the safest yield-generating assets in TradFi. This makes Ondo particularly appealing to institutions. Most of the other RWAs seem to be doing well according to presented data. This is likely due to blockchain technology improving the liquidity and accessibility of real estate, bonds, and credit markets. Real World Assets refer to physical or traditional financial assets that have been tokenized and brought onto the blockchain. These can include various things such as real estate, gold, oil, bonds, treasury securities, and even private equity and venture capital investments. Generally speaking, RWAs provide stable and real world-backed returns, attracting DeFi users who look for reliable yields amid the everlasting crypto market unpredictability. This attracts institutional investors and traditional hedge funds into the mix as well. The appealing part about RWAs is that they allow investors worldwide to access financial instruments that were previously limited to large institutions. From the looks of it, they are likely to play an important role in the future of blockchain-based finance. Ethena Labs and Securitize have announced the launch of Converge, a blockchain designed to support decentralized finance and tokenized assets. The network will cater to both retail and institutional investors, offering standard DeFi applications alongside financial products that comply with institutional requirements. Converge is built on Ethereum’s Virtual Machine, allowing existing Ethereum ( ETH )-based applications and smart contracts to function without modification. Ethena ( ENA ) plans to move its DeFi ecosystem, which holds nearly $6 billion in assets, onto Converge. Securitize, which specializes in tokenizing real-world assets, will use the blockchain to issue and manage digital securities. Tokenized assets are digital representations of financial instruments like stocks, bonds, and real estate. Converge will allow institutions to interact with these assets on-chain while maintaining regulatory compliance. Institutional-grade custodians, including Anchorage, Copper, and Fireblocks, will provide security for these assets. The network will integrate DeFi applications from partners such as Pendle, Aave Labs, and Maple Finance. It will also support interoperability through LayerZero and Wormhole, ensuring seamless asset transfers across blockchains. Oracle providers like RedStone and Pyth will supply real-time price data. Ethena’s ENA token will play a role in securing the network, and the stablecoins USDe ( USDe ) and USDtb will be used for transaction fees. The blockchain will include both permissionless DeFi applications and permissioned offerings for institutional users. Ethena and Securitize see Converge as a solution to regulatory barriers that have kept institutions from fully engaging with DeFi.
