About Qtum

What is Qtum?

Qtum, pronounced as "Quantum", is a groundbreaking blockchain network that saw its inception in 2016. This open-source blockchain platform amalgamates the best features of Bitcoin and Ethereum, offering a developer-friendly environment that supports secure decentralized applications (DApps). By utilizing Bitcoin's Unspent Transaction Output (UTXO) transaction model and integrating it with an adaptation layer interface to the Ethereum Virtual Machine, Qtum has successfully created the first UTXO-based smart contract platform.

This Singapore-based project, founded by Ashley Houston, Neil Mahl, and Patrick Dai, raised US$15.6 million through an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) in 2017 before launching its mainnet in September of the same year. The unique architecture of Qtum, which combines the smart contract capabilities of Ethereum with the UTXO accounting system of Bitcoin, has positioned it as a formidable entity in the cryptocurrency space, fostering a rapidly growing DApp ecosystem that includes decentralized games, search engines, payment toolkits, and social networks.

How Does Qtum Work?

Qtum operates through a three-layer architecture, comprising the base layer where network addresses are maintained using the UTXO model, the Account Abstraction Layer (AAL) that acts as a bridge between the base and the Virtual Machine (VM) layer, and the VM layer where all smart contract processing occurs. This intricate structure allows Qtum to maintain smart contract code execution on the VM layer while passing the finalized account balance values to the base layer for record-keeping in the UTXO format.

The network employs a unique block validation method known as mutualized proof of stake (MPoS), enhancing the security of the Qtum blockchain and minimizing the likelihood of hacking attacks. This consensus mechanism shares block rewards between the node that validates a new block and the nine previous successful block validators, with a portion of the reward being delayed by 500 blocks.

What is QTUM Token?

QTUM is the native cryptocurrency of the Qtum network, serving as the gas token for transactions and smart contract transactions on the platform. Initially distributed through an ICO in March 2017, the token has a maximum specified supply of 107,822,406. QTUM tokens are instrumental in paying transaction fees on the network, participating in on-chain governance protocols, and staking to validate blocks. The token has shown promising signs of recovery, indicating its inherent potential and solid business fundamentals.

Qtum’s Impact on Finance

Qtum stands as a beacon of innovation in the financial sector, offering a secure and scalable platform for businesses to host their DApps. Its decentralized governance protocol (DGP) allows various stakeholders to influence the direction of the project, fostering a democratic and inclusive environment. Moreover, the network's large node network and growing DeFi ecosystem position it as a hotbed for DApp development, particularly in the decentralized finance (DeFi) niche.

By combining the security features of Bitcoin's UTXO model with the smart contract capabilities of Ethereum, Qtum has crafted a potent platform that is poised to attract significant attention from the business community. As Qtum continues to articulate its advantages and enhance its functionality, it stands as a promising investment, ready to make substantial inroads in the business-to-business world.
